My wife and I just got back from Cape May, NJ. First off, we had a nice rental to stay in. After looking at a few different Cape May Vacation Rentals we choose one in a quiet area off the beaten path, so to speak. We went out to do some whale watching after getting settled in. People have been looking for whales off the coast there since the 1700’s. We’d read a full article entitled “Spout Spotting off the Cape” in the July issue of Cape May Magazine so we were stoked to check it out. 
We went on the Cape May Whale Watcher. It was pretty cool. We thought we were going just to see whales but there were dolphins and sea turtles, too. We’re bird watchers and knew one of the best places to birdwatch is Cape May Point State Park. There are 153 acres to hike around and guided bird walks that were very informative and a lot of fun.
Fishing is one of the most popular activities in the area so we looked into that. We found quite a few sport fishing charters offering knowledgeable and experienced guides. They told us fishing inshore during the summer, we might catch flounder, sharks, blue fish, sea bass, weakfish, and numerous other species. But if we went offshore fishing it was good for tuna, blue marlin, white marlin, swordfish, and dolphin. I just couldn’t picture me reeling in a blue marlin or a dolphin.
After a full day out on the boat, it was nice to be able to come back to our rental and kick back. I think of all the Cape May Vacation Rentals we looked at we really did make the best choice for us.
I went to a dear friend’s wedding two weeks ago. It was a pretty cool ceremony held at a Las Vegas wedding chapel. They found this place online and were pretty taken with it. It’s all she talked about for months beforehand! You haven’t had a vacation in paradise until you’ve experienced South Carolina vacations. This is the perfect place to go for time away from things and I give it an A+++. We return year after year because even when we do go somewhere else for a change, we regret not returning to South Carolina. There’s just something about the place that makes me fall in love with it all over again every time I go!
Besides being the Golf Capital of the World the area is also known for shagging, water and beach-related activities, miniature golf, fishing tournaments, dining and shopping. Did I mention the water, the beach, and the sun? On any South Carolina vacations you can kick back in your beach chair and do nothing if you want because it’s your vacation and you’re fully beachin’ it. When you’ve had enough sun you can check out the area restaurants, outside malls, and mega entertainment possibilities the area has to offer. I know you won’t be disappointed. I never am.
If you’ll be there over the 4th of July I’ll give you my plans. Myrtle Beach is having a Fourth of July Concert at the Memorial Stadium there. There will be music, food and fireworks among other stuff. The Surfside Beach 4th of July Celebration is from 6-10 p.m. on July 4th at the pier at 13 North Ocean Blvd. And Barefoot Landing has events going on all day and into the night with fireworks over the lake at 10:15 p.m.

Most shrubs and trees love to be planted in the fall, so they can put down their roots over the winter. “That way they are ready to burst onto the scene with flowers and foliage in the spring.” Even better, nurseries often mark down their plant material at the end of the season, so it’s another chance to save some money. Some specialty plants will need to be ordered for spring, and it’s important to get the order placed in time to have the best selection and highest quality.
Altgelt points out that those who get an autumn head start on their project can have a garden they can enjoy looking at come spring. Otherwise, they could be putting up with a great big muddy mess lasting through the spring and even into the summer. “This can be rather distressing, especially when you consider the alternative.” If one can get through the back hoe and mud stage over the winter, when things are barren anyway, so much the better.
And, of course, the most important consideration is the end result. Optimally, a garden will be pleasing all year round, but Altgelt says most are designed to impress us in the spring and summer. That’s because there is such a wide range of plant choices that exhibit their full splendor in the warm months. Designing a landscape in the fall makes it easier to conceptualize plantings that will provide interest year-round. For example, “a beautiful fall combination of perennials is the Sedum of Autumn Joy, which is reddish or pinkish, next to Salvia, which turns deep purple. These colors resonate with each other. Next if you add the bright golden of the black-eyed Susan, you have a stunning collage of colors.”
The next challenge is to design a landscape that is lovely in the winter. “After the leaves fall and plants begin to go dormant, they reveal their more subtle, internal structure to us. This too can be beautiful, and we take this into account more readily when we design a landscape in the fall.” Some plants, like the evergreens and some grasses, are colorful in the winter. There is a red twig shrub and yellow twig shrub with colorful bare stems after the falling of the leaves. “The earth also begins to reveal more of its sculpted forms when the plants have shed their lushness.”
In Tom’s experience, the fall and winter lend themselves to listening and contemplation, which present opportunities for a connection with the land itself.
